Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin urged the community to take part in efforts to mitigate COVID-19 during the Christmas and New Year holidays by getting vaccinated against the coronavirus.

"What is important is vaccination. Those who have not (been vaccinated) should get vaccinated to create immunity," he said after attending an event to commemorate the 2023 International Migrants Day in Jakarta, which was followed online on Monday.

Amin noted that there have been no special measures from the government to mitigate the transmission of COVID-19 in Indonesia yet because the number of cases is still relatively low compared to the global trend.

He advised the public to don masks in crowded places once again to protect themselves from COVID-19 transmission.

"We have started to monitor, and (people) have started to wear masks in certain places," he pointed out.

He then affirmed that the government is continuing to track the development of COVID-19 cases within the country and globally, which is showing an increasing trend ahead of Christmas and New Year.

According to him, government policies to respond to the COVID-19 situation are devised based on the infection rate in Indonesia.

He affirmed that if the risks become more significant, the government will immediately hold a limited meeting to discuss the COVID-19 situation in detail.

According to the Ministry of Health's webpage on emerging infections, as of December 18, 2023, Indonesia recorded 243 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 116 recoveries, two deaths, and 2,204 active cases.

The Ministry of Health said that the COVID-19 case trend in Indonesia has shown an uptick since October 8–14.

On December 30, 2022, the Indonesian government announced an end to the public activity restrictions (PPKM) policy that was enforced to control COVID-19 transmission in Indonesia.

On June 21, 2023, the government officially revoked the pandemic status in the country.
