Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi urged the management of souvenir shops in Bali to pay attention to the capacity of their parking areas to ensure that customers do not park their vehicles on the road.
He made the appeal after attending a coordination meeting on the management of the traffic flow surrounding the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport following congestion that hindered vehicle flow from and to the airport on Friday (December 29).
"It is true that souvenir stores have been responsible for the traffic jam."It is important to talk this matter out. The logic is that a store whose parking area's capacity is only 10 vehicles should not accommodate 20," he remarked in Badung District, Bali Province, on Sunday.
He also asked the Bali Police chief to deploy personnel to persuade those running souvenir shops to properly manage their parking areas.
"I would like to ask the Bali Police chief to ask station officers to talk to related entrepreneurs," he stated.
The minister then dubbed the congestion, which stretched from the airport to Bali Mandara Toll Road, as an unprecedented and extraordinary event.
"Earlier, we witnessed a rather unpleasant event. However, the bright side is that the event brought us together here. We need to continue to prepare Bali as a place for showcasing Indonesia," he remarked.
Acting Bali Governor Sang Made Mahendra Jaya explained that the congestion occurring along the routes to and from the international airport was triggered by a simultaneous increase in the movement of people and goods.
"In Bali, we have dewasa ayu, or days deemed as good moments for conducting various activities, such as weddings and religious rituals. This led to a simultaneous increase in the mobility of people and goods," he elaborated.
He further said that the Bali provincial government would follow Minister Sumadi's directives to coordinate with relevant stakeholders with the aim of ensuring a sound level of safety and comfort for all people visiting Bali.
