Litaay evaluated that improvement in the legal sector is needed in several fields, including regional regulation, law enforcement, and quality legal education for the provinces of Papua, West Papua, Central Papua, Papua Pegunungan, South Papua, and Southwest Papua.
“The legal sector needs to be improved. The measure is (a form of) support from the legal sector for the preparation of quality regional regulations," he stated via video message on Thursday.
In this regard, he said, regional governments in the six Papuan provinces need to cooperate with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights through its regional offices in the process of creating regional regulations to ensure the results are of quality.
Litaay called for firm law enforcement against crimes in Papua, such as corruption, sexual violence, as well as violence against women and children.
“We must pay attention because some of the cases are still stuck. We need to pay serious attention to the issue because it is related to the protection of women and children’s rights that is part of human rights protection,” he remarked.
He also emphasized the importance of quality legal education in the six provinces of Papua that is carried out by encouraging the implementation of quality discussions on the law to develop in public spaces.
“We must pay more attention to domestic problems, such as theft of wood in the forest or illegal mining that damages the environment. Law enforcement is key here, and the perpetrators must be prosecuted," he remarked.
