Jakarta (ANTARA) - The central government will set up a solar power plant with a capacity of 50 megawatts (MW) this year to supply electricity to the new national capital Nusantara in East Kalimantan.

In a statement released here on Tuesday, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif said that the government is committed to realizing Nusantara as a green and environmentally friendly city.

One of the strategies to realize a green Nusantara is the construction of a 50MW solar power plant that will serve as an energy source for the city.

The solar plant will come up on an area of 100 hectares in Sepaku Sub-district, Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan, and is expected to fulfill 10 percent of Nusantara's electricity needs.

"The green city project, including the 10MW solar power plant in Nusantara has been implemented. The commercial operation date (COD) is next month, and the 40MW plant's COD will be mid-2024," Tasrif informed.

The government is working to ensure that 80 percent of the energy supply in Nusantara comes from new and renewable energy (NRE) sources by 2045.

The planned solar power plant will be equipped with an electrical substation with a capacity of 50 MW and a transmission cable.

Meanwhile, state electricity firm PT PLN has installed public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Nusantara as EVs will be the main means of transportation in the new capital.

In addition to NRE, another clean energy source that will be used to generate electricity in Nusantara will be natural gas.

The use of natural gas has been laid down in the Nusantara Natural Gas Commercial Scheme, which was approved by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and state oil and gas company PT Pertamina Group during the Nusantara gas network meeting on September 1, 2023.
