The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) decided to increase the amount of funds dedicated to dealing with emergency situations following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara Province.
BNPB Head Suharyanto stated that the agency had disbursed an additional assistance fund of Rp250 million (around US$16 thousand) to the East Flores district government.
"This is the second batch of funds handed over to the local government in relation to the raise of Mount Lewotobi's status, from level III to level IV earlier, affecting the social and economic affairs of local residents," he noted in a statement received from BNPB in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Suharyanto made the statement during his visit to East Flores on Tuesday (January 30).
According to the agency head, the fund is meant to help East Flores procure everything necessary during the emergency response period. He underlined that the district government can right away utilize the fund without awaiting the disbursement process.
"Earlier, we distributed Rp250 million of aid funds. Now, we hand out another Rp250 million that can be used immediately," Suharyanto pointed out.
In East Flores, the BNPB head distributed various types of logistics assistance, such as three thousand packages of ready-to-eat food, 10 refuge tents, 15 family tents, 500 camping beds, five portable generators, 10 light towers, three thousand packages of basic goods, and three thousand packages of hygiene kits.

"The central government, through BNPB, helps again. This is our second visit here to deliver more (items to meet the) basic needs required on the field," he stated.
Suharyanto expressed hope that the volcanic activities of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki would gradually decline, so that refugees can return to their homes.
"Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki's status has now declined, from level IV to level III. Hopefully, the status will further decline to level II," he remarked.
He then stated that the BNPB would continue to monitor the volcano's activities by coordinating with the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG).
