"Indonesia's internet speed is still low, still at 24.9 Mbps. Under the Digital Indonesia Vision, we are targeting 765 Mbps by 2045," Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi said in Gowa, South Sulawesi, on Thursday (February 1, 2024).
During the inauguration of the construction of the facade and building of the Class I Radio Frequency Spectrum Monitoring Office of Makassar in Gowa, he noted that internet speed in Indonesia is still relatively slower compared to developed countries.
However, the government is continuing to make efforts to develop networks to enhance the speed and achieve the Digital Indonesia Vision, he added.
The minister called for collaboration and support from all parties for building an inclusive and collaborative digital ecosystem based on innovation.
To this end, he highlighted the importance of shared understanding as well as measured and harmonious implementation steps by the government, the private sector, and the community.
"(We) also expect that concrete support and follow-up action from every government entity — which plays a role and synergizes with the private and public sectors — can be realized as soon as possible in each sector," he said.
Meanwhile, the ministry's director general of resources and postal and informatics devices, Ismail, said that the new office building will be equipped with fixed and mobile station radio frequency spectrum monitoring equipment.
The tasks of the monitoring office building comprise supervising and controlling the use of radio frequency, including observation, detection of emission sources, and monitoring.
"We also maintain communication from the disaster sector because, after an earthquake, if there is a potential for tsunami, all the equipment used by the BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency) and the BNPB (National Disaster Mitigation Agency) use radio frequency spectrum," he explained.
Currently, there are 19 monitoring office buildings spread across Indonesia, including the one in Gowa.
"In 2024, we will run fast to support the agendas of the digital economy, digital technology and bring change," Ismail said.
