"Based on my inspection, the embankment is now in a better condition with all leakages having been patched up," he expounded after inspecting the left embankment of Wulan River in Demak on Wednesday.
He assured that the embankment will not breach again, considering that workers are currently elevating the height of the structure. According to him, the repair works are expected to be completed in one week.
"There are still ongoing works. We need to perfect the structure instead of merely patching it up. That way, we can ensure that the embankment will not be breached, even in the event of a downpour," he said.
The left embankment of Wulan River was breached on February 5, 2024, following heavy rainfall, with the ensuing water discharge flooding residences. It was then revealed that the rain had caused two leakages in the embankment, each spanning 20 meters and 30 meters.
On February 14, the government managed to plug the leaks. It is currently focusing on making the embankment more resilient.
To remove floodwaters in settlements, the government has deployed over 20 water-suctioning machines with a total capacity of pumping out 11,500 liters of water per second, Suharyanto informed.
He noted that the water flooding homes in Ketanjung and Karanganyar Villages of Karanganyar Sub-district has subsided.
Demak District Head Eisti'anah and acting head of the Central Java Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD), Bergas Catursasi Penanggungan, were among the officials who accompanied Suharyanto during his inspection of the embankment.
