Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the House of Representatives (DPR) encouraged stronger cooperation between Indonesia and Turkey after receiving a visit from Turkish Ambassador to Indonesia Talip Kucukcan in Jakarta on Wednesday (March 13).

BKSAP Head Fadli Zon stated that the cooperation between the Indonesian and Turkish parliaments had been established in several forums, such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), and in MIKTA, a grouping of Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia.

"Our closeness with Turkey is very important to support the two countries' tourism, probably cooperation in the defense sector in the future. In the education sector and other sectors, the potential is wide open,” he noted in a BKSAP statement received here, Thursday.

He highlighted that Indonesia has enjoyed long-standing relations with Turkey established hundreds of years ago since the era of ancient kingdoms, from Aceh to Java, and various sultanates in Indonesia that have had a lengthy relationship.

Currently, he noted that there are around 4,500 Indonesian students in Turkey, and several Indonesian tourists visit Turkey and vice versa. He noted that 14 flights operated weekly between Indonesia and Turkey.

The BKSAP head stated that the Turkish ambassador, who has an academic background, also suggested opening numerous opportunities for universities in Turkey and Indonesia to learn from one another.

“Such as Indonesian studies in Turkey or Turkish studies in Indonesia. These are very important to improve the existing relations,” he remarked.

At Wednesday’s bilateral meeting, the two parties bolstered cooperation relations, especially in education and tourism, to become more intensive.
