The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has provided ready-to-use fund (DSP) of Rp250 million (US$15.7 thousand) to expedite the handling of landslides that swept through West Bandung District, West Java, on March 24.
During the handover of funding in Cibenda Village, Cipongkor Sub-district, on Wednesday, BNPB Head Lieutenant General Suharyanto explained that the aid is meant to assist affected residents during the current emergency response period.
"We seek to ensure that all basic necessities of the refugees are genuinely met," he remarked.
He revealed that the BNPB had provided the West Bandung District Government with logistics assistance in the form of packages of groceries and ready-to-eat meals, refugee tents, hygiene kits, generators, tarpaulins, and mattresses.
"Earlier, during a discussion, the residents requested clothing for adults, women, and children as well as sanitary napkins. They are currently in need of those items," he stated.
Suharyanto then affirmed that his side would ensure the fulfillment of basic needs of around 500 refugees displaced by landslides.
"We have checked the conditions of the refugees. It has been three days since they vacated their homes. We have also already reviewed the public kitchen and logistics supply. A brief coordination meeting has been held to decide on the next mitigation measures," he noted.
He further underlined that at least 30 houses need to be relocated since they sit in landslide-prone zones.
"We might need to relocate not only the 30 buried houses but also those located around them. We will relocate them to safer places," he pointed out.
According to the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of West Bandung, the landslides have damaged a total of 34 buildings.
Meanwhile, data from the BPBD of West Java shows that the disaster affected 527 people from 151 families.
