Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said that it has stepped up efforts to ensure safe Eid al-Fitr travel on Java Island and anticipate high extreme weather potential.

At a working meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) here on Tuesday, Basarnas head Kusworo said that due to the extreme weather potential, his side has readied at least 11 units of defense equipment, such as helicopters and ships, for search and rescue activities.

He added that Basarnas has prepared the defense equipment to ensure a safe Eid exodus on Java Island.

The equipment has been divided between the regions of Java Island. For instance, two SAR ships and one Dauphin AS365 helicopter have been deployed at Merak and Bakauheni ports on the western side of Java Island, while two ships have been stationed at Jakarta's Pantai Mutiara.

One helicopter has been readied to cover emergency at three locations in Central Java namely Pati, Semarang, Demak and two ships at Cirebon and Semarang's Tanjung Mas.

On the eastern part of Java Island, one helicopter has been kept ready in Banyuwangi, and two ships at Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya and Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi.

"Thousands of trained SAR personnel are ready to anticipate potential emergencies. In essence, they can act quickly, safely, in an integrated and coordinated manner with all related elements so that the exodus is safe, smooth, and controlled, especially on the Java Island," he said.

Kuswanto reminded operators of crossing ships, airplanes, trains, and buses to strictly comply with the standard operating procedures in order to ensure safe travel.

The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) earlier announced that due to Indonesia's dynamic weather, there is potential for high waves and extreme weather during the Eid holiday season.
