Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transportation has projected that as many as four thousand electric cars will be used by travelers during this year’s Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus.

Head of the vehicle type test sub-directorate of the ministry, Yusuf Nugroho, said here on Thursday that people are expected to not only use electric cars for traveling outside the city, but also for mobility within the city for gatherings with their relatives.

“The population of battery-based electric cars has reached 23,238 units with a projection of around 18 percent of them, around four thousand, potentially be used for this year's Eid exodus," he informed.

Nugroho further said that the government has readied public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLUs) at a number of locations to support the mobility of electric vehicle (EV) users during this year's exodus.

He added that the ministry has created a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the transport of EVs during crossing on ships.

This, according to him, is aimed at reducing the concerns of people using EVs for the exodus.

"In principle, electric vehicles are products that are safe to be used because they have been tested for global safety standards as well as regulations in Indonesia," he affirmed.

According to a survey carried out by the Ministry of Transportation, 193.6 million people are projected to participate in the homecoming exodus to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which is predicted to fall on April 10.

Cumulatively, the ministry predicted that 35.42 million people will use cars, both conventional and electric cars, for the exodus.

The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment has informed that 175 fast-charging type SPKLUs have been prepared along the Trans Sumatra-Java Toll Road.

In total, the number of SPKLUs in Indonesia has reached 1,299. They are spread over 879 locations.
