Jakarta (ANTARA) - The free homecoming exodus program organized by the State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) Ministry has been successful in suppressing the number of motorbike homecomers by promoting means of mass transport, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi stated.

"In the last two years, their (motorbike homecomers') number has declined along with a decrease in traffic accidents. Hence, the free homecoming program is very effective in terms of economic and traffic matters," he remarked during the send-off of homecoming travelers in Jakarta on Friday.

Addressing those planning to travel by buses, the minister highlighted the need to only choose buses that have been inspected and declared as well-prepared by the police.

He then expressed optimism about the free homecoming program assisting people, especially those with low economic capacity, in joining the exodus and arriving safely in their hometowns.

Meanwhile, head of the free homecoming program's organizing committee Rivan A. Purwantono ensured that all buses deployed for the program have complied with safety standards and are manned by select crew.

This year, a total of 88 SOEs and SOE subsidiaries are taking part in implementing the program that draws participation from 94,753 homebound travelers.

As many as 1,536 buses have been prepared for 70,179 travelers, 60 trains for 19,122 travelers, and 30 ships. The program is facilitating people to travel to over 200 districts and cities across Indonesia.

According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Transportation, around 193.6 million people are projected to join this year's Eid homecoming exodus, or an increase of 56.4 percent as compared to 123.8 million travelers recorded during last year's Eid al-Fitr holiday.
