Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transportation has said that intercity trains have been the main choice of transportation among homecoming exodus travelers during this year's Eid al-Fitr holiday period.

During a discussion here on Friday, the ministry's spokesperson, Adita Irawati, informed that based on research carried out by her ministry, 39.32 million or 20.30 percent of the predicted 193.6 million exodus travelers have chosen to travel by train.

This, she said, is different from previous years when people opted for private vehicles on average.

She further said that the busiest departure stations this year are Pasar Senen, Gambir, Bekasi, Cikarang, and Bandung. Meanwhile, the busiest destination stations are Yogyakarta, Kutoarjo, Lempuyangan, Purwokerto, and Bandung.

Irawari further said that other modes of transportation chosen by the community include buses (19.37 percent or 37.51 million people), private cars (18.29 percent or 35.42 million people), motorcycles (16.07 percent or 31.12 million people), and rented cars (6.01 percent or 11.64 million people).

According to a survey carried out by the Ministry of Transportation, 193.6 million people are projected to participate in the homecoming exodus to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which is predicted to fall on April 10 this year.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said here on Tuesday (April 2, 2024) that the predicted figure for Eid exodus travelers was valid because the research was carried out by competent institutions and parties.

"I must emphasize that the survey result of 193.6 million (people joining the exodus) is, insya Allah (God willing), based on a valid survey," he added after attending a working meeting with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR).
