Karawang, W Java (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy, said that the handling of the Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus in 2024 has been better compared to 2023.

"In general, the achievement this year is better compared to 2023, especially in terms of the traffic accident rate," he said during a review at the Cikampek Main Toll Gate here on Monday.

According to him, based on a coordination meeting with relevant parties, the Eid exodus and return flow until D+4 of Eid has run well.

Effendy underscored that the safety of homecoming travelers is the most important thing during the Eid exodus and return flow.

"The ideal rate, of course, is zero accidents, but compared to last year, it is better. The number of fatalities and the amount of compensation declined significantly," he said.

The minister expressed appreciation for officers in the field for continuously providing services to ensure the safety and comfort of travelers.

On the same occasion, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi also lauded the solid performance of officers in realizing the successful implementation of the Eid homecoming exodus.

"We have carried out monitoring in Central Java, West Java, Bakauheni port (Lampung), and others. Indeed, there has been an increase in the number of vehicles," he said.

As per a survey conducted by the Ministry of Transportation, 193.6 million people were expected to join the homecoming exodus to celebrate Eid al-Fitr this year, which fell on April 10.

Earlier, the National Police (Polri) Traffic Corps said that the number of traffic accidents during this year's Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus and return flow period showed a decline of 15 percent compared to the previous year.

"Nationally, traffic accidents declined from 2,159 to 1,835, or declined by 15 percent," the head of Polri's Traffic Corps, Inspector General Aan Suhanan, informed in Jakarta on Friday (April 12).

The number of fatalities due to traffic accidents also declined by 3 percent from 291 to 281.
