Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Anwar Makarim affirmed that the Independent Learning movement was the government's effort to transform and advance Indonesian education.

"Being the leader of the Independent Learning movement makes us increasingly aware of the challenges and opportunities we have to develop Indonesian education," he stated at the commemoration of the 2024 National Education Day on Thursday.

According to Makarim, efforts to transform Indonesian education started from early childhood education to tertiary education through the Independent Learning movement that has been carried out over the last five years.

He acknowledged that the transformation was not easy, especially in changing perspectives in the learning process.

The minister noticed that such efforts required struggle and elicited discomfort in some people. Nonetheless, Makarim emphasized that changes to the country's education system are mandatory and any discomfort caused by changes will only bring about improvement and progress.

During the transition of the movement, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and caused slight changes to the education process.

At that time, Makarim stated that the pandemic also provided an opportunity to accelerate changes to the education system in accordance with current developments, including the use of digital technology.

“We have overcome challenges together. Now, we have begun to feel the changes taking place around us, moved together with simultaneous and consistent steps," the minister remarked.

According to Makarim, the new Indonesian education and culture is starting to gain eminence due to this Independent Learning movement.

The minister then highlighted that Indonesian children are braver to dream coupled with teachers offering a unbounded learning space to impart new knowledge to students.

Makarim highlighted that students felt a positive impact of the movement in their readiness to work and contribute due to the limitless learning space.

"And we are celebrating the creative works of our artists to express their voice," he added.
