Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The death toll from flooding in Luwu District, South Sulawesi Province, has risen to 11 following the discovery of the body of an eight-year-old girl, according to the district's Search and Rescue (SAR) Agency.

"The body of Ulfiana, a resident of West Suli Subdistrict, was found by a joint team of rescuers on tree trunks and had been handed over to her family," Head of the agency's Operations and Alert Department Andi Sultan said here Sunday.

Ulfiana might have been swept away by the strong current of the Suli River on May 3 when a flash flood hit the area. Her body was found about 100 meters away from her mother's body," Sultan added.

The SAR operations would continue until Monday by involving seven rubber boats to cruise down the Suli River in the search for another five-year-old victim, named Mutmita.

Ten bodies had earlier been found not long after flash floods hit certain areas of Suli Subdistrict, Luwu District, on Friday, May 3, 2024.

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the flooding and landslides in Luwu ravaged 13 subdistricts, affecting 1,385 families.

Several hundred residents got displaced and stayed at several mosques and their relatives' houses, the agency said.

The disaster affected 1,867 houses, including 103 units suffering heavy damages and 42 houses getting swept away.

The catastrophe also affected four road sections as.well as rice fields and plantation areas, and caused a bridge and 14 motorcycles and four cars to get damaged.

A team of personnel from the Luwu and South Sulawesi Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and SAR Agency continued the evacuation of affected residents and assess the impacts of the disaster by working.along with their counterparts from local government agencies.
