Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government has been consistently taking viable measures for overcoming the skills gap in the workforce, including by collaborating with manpower stakeholders, Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah stated.

"This is quite a serious problem. Hence, the Manpower Ministry has been striving to address this by equipping laborers with skills, assisting them in enhancing their skills, and adjusting their skills (to the job market)," she said.

The minister made the statement while delivering a speech during a workforce competency-building event that was followed online in Jakarta on Monday.

Fauziyah emphasized that her ministry had continued to bridge the gap between the demands of industries and skills of the workforce by holding training and educational activities.

The minister assessed that the workforce skills gap is inseparable from the disparities between supply and demands for laborers in industries and between the educational system and industrial demand for workers.

She also attributed the gap to the Indonesian workforce's lack of competencies and the country's lack of talents required for boosting workers' capabilities.

"One of the steps taken by the government to overcome the workforce skills gap is implementing the quadruple helix collaboration, in which the central government works hand in hand with stakeholders from regional governments, educational institutions, and industries," she stated.

Fauziyah noted that the collaboration approach is backed by Presidential Regulation No. 68 of 2022 regarding the revitalization of vocational education and training.

The minister underscored the importance of relevant stakeholders collaborating to produce skilled workers by facilitating residents to enroll in both domestic and international apprenticeship programs.

She further deemed it necessary for Indonesia to continue to augment the competencies of talents assigned by providing training courses to the workforce.
