Pangkalpinang (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) is expecting 1,000 Islamic scholars from all over Indonesia to join the Ijtima Ulama VIII meeting in Sungailiat, Bangka district, Bangka Belitung Islands, on May 28–29.

Deputy chairperson of the MUI's Fatwa Commission, Abdulrahman Dahlan, said on Wednesday that the meeting will be opened by Vice President Ma'ruf Amin.

"Currently, some ulama have confirmed attending. However, some are still unable to attend this year's Ijtima Ulama meeting in Sungailiat," he added.

Dahlan said that Bangka Belitung is hosting this year's meeting due to its experience in organizing national and international-level MUI events.

"This location is significant as the MUI has previously held two successful events in Bangka Belitung," he added.

He expressed hope that the upcoming Ijtima Ulama meeting will address the issues faced by the people of Indonesia.
