Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) - The Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) established cooperation with national airline carrier Garuda Indonesia for air transportation for contingents during the 2024 Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON).

The two inked the cooperation agreement at the GMF AeroAsia Hangar 2 in Cengkareng on Monday.

The signing was carried out by KONI Chairman Marciano Norman and Garuda Indonesia President Director Irfan Setiaputra.

"Cooperation in the field of transportation, especially aviation, requires detailed coordination between KONI and Garuda Indonesia. Garuda Indonesia can provide assistance in the ease of air transportation for the contingents," Norman remarked.

He expressed hope that the collaboration between KONI and Garuda Indonesia, also with its subsidiary Citilink, would support the implementation of the 2024 Aceh-North Sumatra PON.

"I hope that this collaboration with Garuda Indonesia and Citilink can assist in the implementation of the 21st PON," he remarked.

PON 2024 is the first time that the sports event will be held in two provinces. Some 38 provinces, including the Papuan new autonomous regions (DOBs), and the Nusantara National Capital (IKN), with defile status, will participate in the PON 2024.

In the 21st PON, some 33 sports categories will be competed in Aceh and 34 other categories in North Sumatra, and it will be the last PON to be held during the administration of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Ma'ruf Amin.

The cooperation between KONI and Garuda Indonesia will last for the next four years.

Norman is upbeat that this collaboration would be able to proffer benefits not only for the PON 2024 but also for other sports events, such as the Indonesian Martial Art Games (IMAG) and the Indonesian Beach Games (PON Beach).

Garuda Indonesia will provide several benefits for athletes participating in the 2024 PON, such as offering special prices, ticket flexibility, and special check-in counters.
