Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani stated that members of parliament remained challenged by residents' initiative to publicize their concerns on social media rather than directly reporting them to authorities.

Residents summarize this tendency in the 'no viral, no justice' phrase, underscoring a lack of public trust in the authorities.

“The people mandated the state power exercised by the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches, and those powers should now implement their duties effectively to manage the people’s affairs,” Maharani stated during a DPR plenary session in Jakarta on Thursday.

She pointed out that such conditions arise when residents perceive that they have received unsatisfactory responses from the authorities when they complain about their issues, feeling it is too late or even receiving no response at all.

“Hence, residents decided to take matters into their own hands by making it viral on social media,” Maharani remarked.

The DPR should commit to working to meet the expectations of residents, as they have pinned high hopes on the lawmakers who are mandated by their electorate to act in the general interest, she emphasized.

The DPR will exert its utmost efforts to realize better, more advanced, and more prosperous lives for the people, Maharani added.

She remarked that lawmakers had organized work meetings and hearings to discuss issues that most concern the residents, such as online gambling, land mafia, and illegal drug distribution at the national border in Kalimantan.

Maharani also highlighted the government’s pivotal role in effectively addressing the people’s issues to improve public trust in the authorities.
