Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita underscored the need to strengthen the role of industrial services and assist industries in exploring business opportunities to solidify the national manufacturing sector.
Speaking at the opening of the Exhibition and Seminar of Industrial Services 2024 in Jakarta on Tuesday, the minister remarked that industrial services play a strategic role in developing the national manufacturing sector.
On that note, he underlined that industrial services function as an enabler that helps industries pursue effectiveness and efficiency, supports the processing industry, and contributes to Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP).
Kartasasmita then cited data presented by Trademap, saying that Indonesia imported service products worth US$43 billion in total in 2022. On the contrary, the value of the country's export of service products only stood at US$23 billion.
"We need to turn the tide by devising on-point and quick strategies," he emphasized.
The minister highlighted that the government had decided to take seven steps to develop domestic industrial services, including classifying industrial services, mapping their contribution to the national GDP, and constructing more supporting infrastructure.
The Ministry of Industry is currently formulating a method to calculate the contribution of industrial services to the GDP in collaboration with Statistics Indonesia (BPS).
Based on a study conducted by the Ministry's Industrial Services Standardization and Policy Agency (BSKJI) last year, the value of the services' contribution to the GDP during the 2015-2022 period was estimated at 3.5 percent.
Moreover, the Industry Ministry is devising a road map for the development of several prioritized sub-sectors of the industrial service sector.
The sub-sectors include design and industrial construction services; services of installation and commissioning of industrial equipment; industrial research, engineering, and design services; industrial process services; and maintenance and repair services.
