Jakarta (ANTARA) - Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno is keen to offer sound healing using traditional and instrumental elements as an alternative mental wellness activity in all tourism villages in Indonesia.

As per World Health Organization (WHO) data, at least 970 million people were living with mental disorders, anxiety, and depression in 2019, he pointed out here on Thursday.

While he was serving as the deputy governor of Jakarta, he and a professor conducted research which found that almost 20 percent of Jakarta residents had mental health problems.

Therefore, he said, people need to be made aware and gain an understanding of mental health problems.

The tourism and creative economy is closely related to mental health, with young people nowadays interested in wellness tourism, he added.

Meanwhile, the ministry has developed over six thousand tourism villages throughout the country that are part of the Tourism Village Network (Jadesta).

According to Uno, as part of wellness tourism, tourism villages can include sound healing as one of the attractions.

"Every region in Indonesia has unique musical instruments. For instance, I see an angklung at the Marzoeki Hospital. We can use angklung in West Java, kolintang in North Sulawesi, and gamelan in Central Java," he said.

According to harpist, actor, music, sound, and frequency bioresonance practitioner, Maya Hasan, Indonesia has many traditional musical instruments. Music can be a curative and preventive tool in wellness, she said.

"I suggested instrumental music so (patients) will not associate certain words with bad memories or events in their life," she added.

She said that the presence of music in health institutions not only helps patients, but also helps reduce the stress levels of health workers so that they can be more optimal at work.
