Jakarta (ANTARA) - Former Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla left for Doha, Qatar, on Thursday to pay his last respects and attend the funeral of Ismail Haniyeh, the late leader of the Palestinian resistance organization, Hamas.

In a written statement, Kalla said that he will attend Haniyeh's funeral representing Indonesia, fulfilling the request of the Palestinian people.

"We have been invited to attend the funeral of the late Ismail Haniyeh," he added.

The funeral prayer for Haniyeh in Tehran was led by Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, at the University of Tehran, where he, alongside one of his bodyguards, was laid in state.

The late Hamas political bureau leader's body will later be flown to Doha, where another funeral prayer has been organized at Imam Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab Mosque after the Friday prayer on August 2. He will be buried in Lusail, Qatar.

On Wednesday, Hamas announced that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli airstrike on his residence in Tehran, Iran. He was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Masoud Pezeshkian as Iranian President on Tuesday.

Countries around the globe, including Indonesia, were quick to denounce the assassination. Most condemned the murder for derailing ongoing peace efforts and said it could potentially lead to an escalation of the regional conflict.

President Joko Widodo on Thursday called Haniyeh's assassination "an act of violence" and "a murder that cannot be tolerated."

Meanwhile, Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement on Wednesday, said that the murder "constitutes a provocation that could escalate conflicts in the region."

However, Israel, whom Iran accused of perpetrating the assassination, has yet to make an official statement regarding the airstrike on Haniyeh's residence in Tehran.
