Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) expressed its readiness to strengthen marine space surveillance around Indonesia's new capital city Nusantara (IKN) through the presence of a surveillance base in North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan.

According to the rules, one surveillance base or technical implementation unit (UPT) normally requires 50 members.

"The number of standard personnel at the Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance (PSDKP) UPT of the KKP is 50 people," Director General of PSDKP of KKP Pung Nugroho Saksono told ANTARA in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He remarked that the additional UPT is also an effort to respond to the on-field surveillance dynamics, which is currently only at the PSDKP Unit level.

Furthermore, Saksono highlighted several strategic matters related to surveillance around IKN, such as water pollution, utilization of marine space, including submarine cables and pipes, as well as the issues of traditional fishermen and the north coast (pantura).

Fishing activities by pantura fishermen in the waters of South Kalimantan, especially fishing vessels using so called JBT or "certain type of fuels" from Central Java, have been rejected by South Kalimantan fishermen, he remarked.

"This has caused problems that can lead to violence and unwanted actions by South Kalimantan fishermen against JTB fishing vessels from Central Java," he noted.

As is known, in the supervision area of the Tarakan PSDKP Station that oversees the Balikpapan SDKP Satwas, it has coordinated with the South Kalimantan Marine and Fisheries Service regarding the activities carried out by fishermen in the two areas.

The addition or construction of UPT will begin if the Ministry of State Apparatus and Bureaucratic Reform (PAN RB) approves the proposal for the institutional arrangement of the PSDKP UPT, which will later be submitted by the KKP Secretariat General.

The approval is based on the requirements stipulated in the Regulation of the Minister of PAN RB Number 2 of 2023 concerning the Organization.
