Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo has urged regional leaders to plan city development around a particular goal, saying that they must emulate Nusantara, which has set the goal of becoming a forest city for the future.

As a forest city, Indonesia's new capital will prioritize environment-friendliness and sustainable development, as well as focus on maintaining its green spaces and natural ecosystem, he said.

"Nusantara is an example of a future city developed with plans and concepts of the future. Nusantara is a forest city and not a concrete city," he added while giving instructions to regional leaders at Nusantara's State Palace on Tuesday.

Widodo informed that a city in the US state of North Carolina, High Point, is known as the "Furniture Capital of the World." This implies that the city government has set the development target by focusing on the furniture industry, he added.

"We have the same potential in Jepara district. The district head should conceive the design or concept, which may need two leadership terms to complete, that should be detailed and final," he advised.

Jepara region in Central Java is known nationally for its Javanese teak wood carving art and local-made furniture.

He then cited the example of a city in California, which focused its development on the golf industry, which resulted in the city getting 37 golf courses.

Widodo said that Indonesian regions, like Nusantara city, must integrate more technological advancements in their regional development to cater to the increasingly digital life.

"The changing times give us good momentum. It is the time to integrate digital or other technologies to make (Nusantara) a livable city and comfortable for its inhabitants," he added.

"I believe all provinces, districts, and cities should aim in this direction as well," he said.
