IKN is for Millennial and Gen Z…The city is designed as a future city for youngsters.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is developing Nusantara capital city (IKN) in East Kalimantan as a city designed for the country's younger generations, according to Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono.

"IKN is for Millennial and Gen Z people, not for me nor Mr. President Joko Widodo. The city is designed as a future city for youngsters," he said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), people belonging to the Millennial group account for 26 percent of Indonesia's population, while Gen Z youths make up 28 percent.

The minister, who is also serving as chairperson of the IKN Authority, expressed the hope that Nusantara would be empowered and operated by young civil servants equipped with digital skills.

Earlier, President Joko Widodo projected that it may take Indonesia 10–15 years to complete the construction of its future seat of government.

"It still requires a long time. The construction began in 2021–2022 and will be completed in about 10–15 years," he said while giving directions to regional heads at the Nusantara State Palace, East Kalimantan, on August 13, 2024.

He also informed that the city's development has so far progressed to around 20 percent.

Based on the Nusantara Master Plan outlined in Law No. 3 of 2022, Indonesia has set the targets of emerging as one of the world's five economic giants and escaping the middle-income trap by pursuing the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.

The planned capital city relocation from Jakarta to Nusantara is one of the strategies employed to achieve the ambitious vision, which entails more inclusive and equitable development in all regions, ditching the Java-centric paradigm.

Nusantara is also expected to play a key role in Indonesia's development and serve as another symbol of the pride of the nation.
