Badung (ANTARA) - The National Food Agency (Bapanas) outlined a number of practices carried out by the Indonesian government to support food security at the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) in Bali on Tuesday.

"Our vision is to support an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable national food system governance to achieve food security based on food sovereignty and independence," the agency's head, Arief Prasetyo Adi, stated.

To support food security, Bapanas is targeting to ensure food availability and stability, manage the issues of food and nutrition, as well as pursue food diversification and security, he informed.

Food availability is being targeted to achieve the fulfillment of food demand and maintain food prices across Indonesia.

The government is also seeking to ensure easy food accessibility to reduce the number of vulnerable areas and food waste.

In addition, the government is working on utilizing food to ensure increased food consumption based on recommended targets and preserving the quality and safety of fresh food.

These targets are being pursued through the implementation of several programs, provision of recommendations on food availability and needs, establishment of food reserves, efforts to control food prices, and monitoring at the producer and consumer levels.

In that context, the government has issued Presidential Regulation Number 125 Concerning the Implementation of Government Food Reserves.

During the discussion on Tuesday, Adi recommended some policies to manage food and nutrition vulnerability and optimally utilize food before it goes waste.

Food security is among the priority sectors promoted by Indonesia, in cooperation with African countries. The other sectors include economic transformation, energy, mining, health, and development.

The 2nd IAF is expected to increase cooperation between Indonesia and African countries, with the target of forging business agreements worth US$3.5 billion.
