Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) expressed appreciation to the Vatican for its ongoing advocacy for peace in Palestine and its support for the two-state solution. "Conflicts and wars are occurring in various parts of the world, including Palestine, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 40,000 people," Jokowi remarked during his meeting with Pope Francis at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The president emphasized that Indonesia and the Vatican are committed to promoting peace and tolerance in a world increasingly marked by turbulence, including conflicts in the Middle East.

"Wars benefit no one; they only bring suffering and misery to ordinary people," he highlighted.

Pope Francis is undertaking an apostolic journey to the Asia-Pacific from September 3-13, 2024. His visit will include Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Singapore, with Indonesia being the first stop.

Pope Francis will be in Indonesia from September 3-6, 2024. Previously, Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II visited Indonesia in 1970 and 1989, respectively.

On Wednesday afternoon (September 5), the Pope is scheduled to meet with bishops, priests, deacons, and others at Jakarta Cathedral and later engage with Scholas Occurrentes youths at the Youth Center of Graha Pemuda Senayan.

The following day, he will participate in an interfaith dialogue at Istiqlal Mosque in the morning and greet beneficiaries of charitable organizations at the Office of the Indonesian Bishops' Conference (KWI) in the afternoon.

On the same day, he will preside over a grand holy mass at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium at 5 p.m. local time, which will be attended by tens of thousands of Catholics. He will depart for Papua New Guinea on Friday, September 6.
