Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vietnamese President Tô Lâm has asked Indonesia to train Vietnamese military officers, equipping them with the skills required for participating in the United Nations peacekeeping missions.

The president conveyed his interest in Indonesia's assistance during a bilateral meeting with Indonesian Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Saturday (September 14).

"I hope that Indonesia will share its experiences and help train Vietnamese officers to participate in UN peacekeeping forces," he told Prabowo, as cited from the Indonesian Defense Ministry's statement here.

During the meeting, Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia and Vietnam had been enjoying solid defense cooperation while pointing out that the two countries have been providing training on their official languages to each other's military officers.

The Defense Ministry stated that the ability to understand and speak Indonesian language is vital for Vietnamese soldiers to enroll in programs and courses offered by the Military Command and Staff College (Sesko) and the National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas).

Since 1957, Indonesia has dispatched its soldiers to a range of UN-led peacekeeping operations in various countries, including Lebanon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cyprus, Somalia, South Sudan, Western Sahara, and Sudan.

Moreover, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) has been operating the Peacekeeping Mission Center (PMPP) to prepare personnel that will be dispatched to a UN peacekeeping mission.

President Tô Lâm was the first Vietnamese leader Prabowo met after arriving in the Southeast Asian country on Friday (September 13).

After meeting with the Vietnamese head of state, the Indonesian defense minister was received by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on the same day.

During the meeting with the Vietnamese president, Prabowo was accompanied by Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Denny Abdi, Speaker of Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sugiono, and Indonesian Defense Attache in Vietnam Dian Tri Hutanto.
