According to his written statement received in Jakarta, Sunday, Suryanto also assessed that people or organizations that create and spread fake news do not think about its impact on the global community.
“BRICS media can move together to fight the spreading of fake news to build more harmony of world,” Suryanto added.
He also said that BRICS media can communicate with each other to fight fake news together, as well as create clear, honest, and fact-based information, confirm, and provide the truth.
Previously, ANTARA News Agency President Director Akhmad Munir said that ANTARA fully supports a media landscape that values truth and diversity for a more harmonious world.
"Let's continue to support a media landscape that values truth, diversity, and our collective journey towards a more harmonious world," said Akhmad Munir while speaking at the 2024 BRICS Media Summit in Moscow, Russia, Saturday (Sept 14).
Meanwhile, Director General of the Russian TASS News Agency, Andrey Kondrashov, said that the BRICS Media Summit was held to enhance the role of the media in the process of forming a multipolar world.
According to Kondrashov, BRICS is a real force with political, economic and humanitarian dimensions.
Therefore, Kondrashov continued, the leaders of the member states, as well as the media leaders of those countries, need to coordinate their actions to build a new and just world order.
The BRICS Media Summit organized by the Russian TASS News Agency with the support of China's Xinhua News Agency took place in Moscow, Russia, on September 13-17, 2024.
The summit discussed “The Role of BRICS Media Communications in Strengthening Stability and Cooperation in a Multipolar World” and “BRICS Media: Technological Transformation on the Way to a New World.”
The event brought together prominent media leaders from the BRICS member states and countries that have applied to join BRICS.
The participants acknowledged the role of media in maintaining and strengthening international dialogue and agreed to a commitment to promote comprehensive coverage in their respective media of interactions within the BRICS and BRICS+ mechanisms, including in the political, economic and humanitarian fields.
“BRICS participants reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of fact-based and unbiased journalism and expressed their readiness to coordinate efforts to counter disinformation,” according to the Final Declaration of the BRICS Media Summit 2024.
They also stressed the need to respect journalists’ rights and ensure their safety, including when reporting on military conflicts.
BRICS was founded in 2009 with Brazil, Russia, India and China as members, and South Africa joined in 2011, with the acronym formed from the first letters of the member states.
In December 2023, several more countries joined, but the group decided to retain the name BRICS.
