Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar has highlighted the importance of green leadership to support environmentally friendly policies.

"Green leadership is leadership that has an environmental perspective that is proactive and creative towards the interests of the people and the environment. It should also have a sense of balance between ecological support and development, both physical and non-physical," she explained.

She made the remarks while presenting the 2023 Green Leadership Nirwasita Tantra awards to regional heads in Jakarta on Wednesday.

She also encouraged provincial and district/city legislatures to support the implementation of sustainable policies initiated by leaders in their respective regions.

The minister explained that the legislatures' support for sustainable policies could include ratifying regulations and budgets. In addition, the regional house of representatives (DPRD) could also recommend sustainable policies through their constituents.

She added that collaboration between the government and legislature is needed to realize sustainable policies for a good and healthy environment.

"I would like to invite all of us to see once again that the right to a good and healthy environment is a Constitutional right of citizens," she emphasized.

On Wednesday, Minister Bakar presented awards to several regional heads as well as provincial and district/city DPRDs for their green leadership initiatives of the previous year.

The recipients of the regional head awards included the governors of Aceh, West Java, and West Sumatra. Meanwhile, the recipients of the DPRD-level awards included Central Java, South Kalimantan, and Aceh.

The award categories also included the regional heads and DPRDs of large, medium, and small cities/regencies. The winners of those awards included the mayors of Surabaya, Balikpapan, and Probolinggo, and the district heads of Jombang, Trenggalek, and South Bangka.

The DPRDs of Surabaya, Balikpapan, and Probolinggo cities, as well as Jombang, Trenggalek, and South Bangka districts were also conferred awards.
