The Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) has sealed two tourism resorts managed by foreign investors on Derawan Islands, Berau district, East Kalimantan province, for lacking the required permits.
The tourist resorts are located on Maratua Island and Nabuko Island within the Derawan Islands. PT MID is operating the Maratua Island resort and PT NMR is running the resort on Nabuko Island.
"Maratua, one of Indonesia's outermost islands, requires special attention from the government. Thus, the KKP took actions to secure our peripheral islands to affirm national sovereignty," KKP's director general of marine resources surveillance, Pung Nugroho Saksono, informed in Maratua Island on Thursday.
He explained that the two resorts have been closed since they did not take approval for the suitability of marine space utilization activities (PKKPRL), permits for nautical tourism businesses, and permits to capitalize on islets.
"Following inspection, we found out that one resort has its permits expired, while the other has no permits," he pointed out.
He further said that PT MID was using investments from Malaysia. Meanwhile, PT NMR is managed by Swiss nationals using investments from Germany.
Saksono said that the government has also slapped a fine of Rp836.32 million (US$55 thousand) on PT NMR and Rp405.13 million (US$26.7 thousand) on PT MID.
He then urged all resort operators in Indonesia to obtain the necessary permits, adding that the government will take firm action against any non-compliance within one month after sealing.
"We hope that you obey Indonesia's regulations. This country has its own rules," he told resort operators.
