Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani highlighted that the national assembly had carried out a total of 2,962 work visits to various Indonesian regions and countries during the 2019-2024 legislative period.

Speaking at the final plenary meeting of DPR for the said period, she noted that national legislators had embarked on 1,199 domestic visits, 163 overseas visits, and 1,600 specific visits in the last five years.

"The supervisory function of the DPR has always been directed at ensuring that state administration runs within legitimate corridors and that the government makes genuine efforts to elevate people's living standards and provide them with conveniences," Maharani remarked in Jakarta on Monday.

The speaker further noted that the legislature had established 418 work committees and one special committee.

Moreover, she highlighted that the DPR had organized thousands of meetings to oversee the implementation of laws and monitor the government's performance in spurring national development.

"Throughout the 2019-2024 period, we have exercised our supervisory function through 1,063 work meetings, 1,356 hearing meetings, and 852 public hearing sessions," the daughter of Indonesia's fifth President, Megawati Soekarnoputri, stated.

Furthermore, the lawmaker emphasized that DPR's supervisory function has been in line with the implementation of the principle of checks and balances among state legislative, executive, and judiciary bodies.

She then stated that the DPR is also entitled to the parliamentary diplomatic function, in addition to the functions of legislation, budgeting, and supervision.

In this regard, Maharani underlined that the legislative body had engaged not only in bilateral and multilateral diplomatic activities but also hosted several international sessions.

She explained that the partnerships forged by DPR with foreign parliaments aimed to facilitate Indonesia to make contributions to the world's prosperity, stability, and peace.
