BKSAP Deputy Chairperson Putu Supadma Rudana stated that the EVP is based on the agreement of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) that every country that is holding general elections must invite AIPA member countries to become observers.
"We want to show the world the transparency of our democracy, the accountability of our democracy," he noted in a statement from the DPR on Tuesday.
Previously, the BKSAP has attended election observation activities in various countries, including Uzbekistan and Cambodia.
Rudana underscored that the commitment of the Indonesian parliament to the AIPA will be continued.
"Finally, Indonesia can become a host in the 2024 General Elections," he remarked.
He also emphasized that the EVP is crucial to showcasing Indonesia's commitment to continuously encouraging global agendas, one of which is the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to support sustainable development in terms of democracy.
He underlined the importance of overseeing democracy to materialize a good democracy index, adding that Indonesia, along with the Philippines and Malaysia, enjoys a good democracy rating.
"Of course, it will provide opportunities and give prosperity to the people," he remarked.
Indonesia will hold the general elections on Wednesday, February 14, with around 204.8 million voters expected to participate.
During the elections, Indonesians will elect a president and a vice president, as well as members of the House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Representatives Council (DPD), and Regional Legislative Councils (DPRD) at the provincial, city, and district levels.
On the polling day, representatives from the parliaments of friendly countries and three international parliamentary bodies, through the EVP, will observe directly the voting and vote counting processes in polling stations in Bali, namely in Penglipuran Village, the Jimbaran area, and the Garuda Wisnu Kencana area.
