Jakarta (ANTARA) - Puan Maharani has been reelected as the Speaker of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) for the 2024-2029 term during the parliament's inaugural plenary session in Jakarta on Tuesday.

During the session, presided over by Guntur Sasono, the acting DPR Speaker, the newly inducted parliament members approved Maharani's reelection.

"The DPR Speaker's position must be held by a member of the political party with the most seats in the DPR," Sasono said, citing Article 427D of the Parliamentary Law, which regulates the election of the Speaker.

Maharani is a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), which holds the largest number of seats in the DPR with 110.

In the same session, the parliament also approved the appointment of the deputy speakers: Adies Kadir of the Golkar Party, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad of the Gerindra Party, Saan Mustopa from the NasDem Party, and Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal from the National Awakening Party (PKB).

Referring to the Parliamentary Law, Sasono noted that the four deputy speakers must come from the second, third, fourth, and fifth-largest party factions.

He also mentioned that the names of the Speaker and deputy speakers had been agreed upon during a consultation meeting between the acting DPR Speaker and representatives of party factions.

The 2024-2029 parliamentary term marks the second term for Sufmi Dasco Ahmad as deputy speaker. Meanwhile, Adies Kadir, Saan Mustopa, and Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal are all returning members of parliament.

The induction of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) members elected in the February 2024 general election—including 580 DPR members and 152 Regional Representatives Council (DPD) senators—was held at the Parliament Complex on Tuesday morning.

The number of DPR members has increased from 575 to 580, while the number of DPD members has grown from 136 to 152 due to the creation of new provinces.
