Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology has said that Adiwiyata Schools or Green Schools are role models for the implementation of sustainability principles.

The sustainability principles are implemented at the schools through waste management, energy conversion, and conservation of natural resources.

"The Adiwiyata School program is a reminder that we must continue to develop environmental education," Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister's expert staff for regulations, Nur Syarifah, said here Wednesday.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology lauded the Ministry of Environment and Forestry for consistently carrying out the Adiwiyata School program since 2006.

According to Syarifah, the Independent Curriculum that has been set as a national curriculum provides flexibility to schools to develop learning materials regarding the environment.

The curriculum also provides opportunities for stakeholders to participate in the learning process.

"This Adiwiyata program is an important part of the government's commitment to creating human resources who are not only academically smart, but also environmentally aware and socially responsible," she said.

She further said that her ministry has also published books on climate change education guidelines, which can be accessed via the ministry's website and can be important references to enrich environmental learning in schools.

She invited all schools to utilize the books to integrate climate change learning materials into the learning curriculum so that students can have a better understanding of the impacts and risks of climate change and ways to mitigate and find solutions to the challenges it presents.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry on Wednesday gave the Adiwayata awards to 720 schools that met the criteria for the school environmental awareness movement, in accordance with the Environment and Forestry Minister's Regulation Number 53 of 2019.

Syarifah said that the awards are not only a form of recognition for the schools' success, but also a symbol and collective effort of the nation to create generations that care about the sustainability of the planet.
