Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani urged the Indonesian government to use its influence to prevent conflict escalation in the Middle East.

He noted that conflicts in the region are rising and expanding. Thus, Indonesia can use its influence in several forums, such as the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), G20, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

“On behalf of the People's Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia, on behalf of the Indonesian nation and the Indonesian people, we respectfully request the government of the Republic of Indonesia to use its influence,” he remarked at the Parliamentary Complex here on Thursday.

He made the statement while delivering his first speech after being inaugurated as MPR speaker for the 2024-2029 period along with eight MPR deputy speakers.

While making efforts to prevent war from escalating, Muzani said, Indonesia must continue to fight for Palestine’s independence as a commitment that is still upheld.

He said that the independence of Palestine is a historical mandate that has been carried since the Asian-African Conference in Bandung in 1955, through the Ten Bandung Principles. However, that mandate had yet to be realized.

To this end, he called on all parties, including the media and academicians, to synergize in voicing the interests of the people of Palestine.

“We must collaborate to ensure that their voices are heard and fought for with strong International support,” he remarked.
