Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani called on all people's representatives serving in the parliament to live life in moderation after being inaugurated for the 2024-2029 parliamentary term.

Muzani emphasized that living a life of moderation is morally imperative for all parliamentarians to stay true to the 1945 Constitution.

"Living in moderation does not mean that we ignore progress or avoid achievements," Muzani stressed while delivering his first speech during the inauguration of the 2024-2029 MPR speakership at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Thursday.

In his view, a frugal life could teach its practitioners about the true value of what they have and guide them to strengthen social bonds and care for their surroundings.

The lawmaker expressed belief that such a way of life would allow parliamentarians to contribute more significantly to society.

"By living in moderation, we can focus more on things that are genuinely important, such as family and friendship," he pointed out.

Muzani then highlighted the need for all MPR members to work synergistically, as he believes that the assembly will face challenging tasks ahead.

He also appealed to all MPR members to maintain public trust by contemplating the very values upheld and considered vital by the Indonesian nation.

Earlier, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (MA) Muhammad Syarifuddin administered the oath of office to Muzani of the Gerinda Party, who succeeds Bambang Soesatyo as the MPR speaker, and his deputy speakers.

Previously serving as deputy speaker in the 2019-2024 term, Muzani will lead the MPR for the next five years along with eight deputies comprising one senator in the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) and seven representatives of party factions in the House of Representatives (DPR).
