According to the State Secretariat, the regulation was signed by President Jokowi on October 7, 2024.
The Batam International Tourism and Health SEZ spans an area of 47.17 hectares, consisting of Sekupang (23.10 hectares) in Tanjung Pinggir Village and Nongsa (24.07 hectares) in Sambau Village.
According to Article 5 of the regulation, the National Council for SEZs has issued a decree instructing business entities to begin the development and management of the Batam International Tourism and Health SEZ within seven days of the government regulation coming into effect.
The SEZ is expected to be completed and ready to operate within a maximum of 36 months, according to the action plan, which covers the readiness of infrastructure, human resources, and administrative equipment.
In his considerations, President Jokowi projected that Batam SEZ can accelerate regional development as well as support regional and national economic development.
The main focus of the SEZ are the international tourism and health sectors, which are expected to attract investment, create jobs, and encourage sustainable economic growth in Batam.
As per the official SEZ website, the development of the Batam SEZ was initiated by PT Karunia Praja Pesona, targeting an investment of up to Rp6.91 trillion (USD1 = Rp15,640). It is estimated to absorb 105,406 workers.
The main investor of the Batam SEZ, Apollo Hospitals India, is committed to completing the development of international standard health services and start offering them by 2026.
This project is also expected to help save up to Rp500 billion in foreign exchange.
So far, 24 SEZs have been established in Indonesia with total investment of Rp205.2 trillion. They have absorbed 132,227 workers.
