Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Social Affairs, Saifullah Yusuf, has asked social workers to consistently engage in the government's lifelong social protection program to serve underprivileged people.

In a press release received from the ministry's public relations here on Saturday, Yusuf stressed that everyone, especially the poor, must get social protection and security so they can meet their basic needs.

One of the social protection programs that have been carried out by the Ministry of Social Affairs is the Family Hope Program (PKH).

Through PKH, the ministry is striving to fulfill the basic wants of the needy by providing them conditional cash assistance, he explained.

"After their basic needs are met, then they must be empowered," he added.

He explained he expects that with economic empowerment programs, social aid recipients will become independent in meeting their own needs.

However, he said that for those who cannot be empowered immediately, his side will implement the social rehabilitation program first.

According to the minister, the implementation of the programs is a manifestation of the lifelong social protection program. He said that this is the ministry's way to speed up poverty reduction in Indonesia.

To that end, Minister Yusuf asked social workers to collaborate with each other.

"We will carry out consolidation comprehensively, including with social workers so that they can carry out their duties effectively and the poverty reduction target can be achieved," he informed.

The poverty reduction target can be achieved if social workers go hand in hand with the government, he added.

That is because social workers not only provide social assistance to people in need, but also identify their needs and ensure they can become independent and thereby, no longer require government aid.
