Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Embassy in Cairo and the Central Sulawesi Provincial Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Service are collaborating to increase domestic whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) exports to the Egyptian market.

As part of efforts to boost shrimp exports, the Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt, Lutfi Rauf, recently visited whiteleg shrimp farming ponds owned by PT EPU in Central Sulawesi.

"This visit shows the government's support for PT EPU, which has the availability of whiteleg shrimp products to meet national market demand and is expected to meet Middle Eastern market demand, especially the Egyptian market," he said in a statement released on Thursday.

Farmed whiteleg shrimp is one of Indonesia's fishery and marine products that is popular among Egyptian consumers.

According to Rauf, Egypt is a potential market for Indonesia's superior products, including whiteleg shrimp.

"It proves that vannamei shrimp from Indonesia has high quality and competitiveness. This momentum is expected to be utilized optimally to increase export volume to the Egyptian market," he said.

Meanwhile, the embassy's trade attaché, M. Syahran Bhakti S., said that the existence of an operational data digitalization system that takes into account business sustainability and the surrounding environment will provide a positive value to the shrimp exports.

This is expected to attract potential buyers from Egypt and other surrounding countries.

"(The value of) Indonesian fishery and marine products with the HS 1604 harmonization system code exported to Egypt in 2023 reached USD2 million or equivalent to Rp30 billion," he informed.

"On the other hand, exports of frozen fish products with the harmonization system code 0303 managed to rake in USD855 thousand or equivalent to Rp13.2 billion," he added.
