Jakarta (ANTARA) - Residents of East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, evacuated following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, will receive a monthly housing allowance from the government, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) announced.

"Each family will receive a housing allowance of Rp500,000 (US$32) per month. We aim to complete housing construction within six months, so they will receive a total of Rp3 million (US$190)," said BNPB head Suharyanto at a press conference on Thursday.

He explained that the allowance is meant to ease the burden on affected families while their homes are rebuilt by the government, a process expected to take six months.

The provision of the allowance is being finalized and will be disbursed soon, he added.

In coordination with the local government, the BNPB will build temporary housing for the displaced residents and assist those who wish to stay with relatives.

"We understand that living in a refugee camp, regardless of its facilities, is uncomfortable. Therefore, we are providing alternative options," Suharyanto said.

According to BNPB’s Disaster Mitigation Operations Control Center, evacuation sites are spread across six locations in East Flores and Sikka districts.

In East Flores, three locations are accommodating 2,704 people, while three other locations in Sikka are sheltering 1,890 people.

Each site is equipped with basic necessities, cooking facilities, medicines, and medical personnel to monitor the health of those affected.
