"The supermoon on November 16, 2024, has the potential to cause an increase in the maximum sea level," Eko Prasetyo, director of maritime meteorology at the BMKG, said in an official statement issued on Wednesday.
A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, known as perigee. This makes the moon appear larger and brighter than usual in the night sky.
Based on the BMKG's monitoring of water level data and tidal predictions, coastal flooding could occur in several coastal areas, including the Riau Islands, West Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, Jakarta, the north coast of Java, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and Papua.
"Potential coastal flooding could generally impact community activities around ports and coasts, such as loading and unloading activities at ports, activities in coastal settlements, salt ponds, and inland fisheries," Prasetyo informed.
Therefore, he emphasized the importance of public awareness and preparedness to deal with the impact of rising sea tides.
He recommended checking the latest maritime weather information from official BMKG channels: call center (021-6546315/18 or 196); official website (http://maritim.bmkg.go.id); Twitter and Instagram @BMKGmaritim; and local BMKG offices.
Separately, the head of BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati, stated that the BMKG Info app is a more helpful resource for farmers than Google when it comes to weather and climate prediction.
"With God's will, the BMKG Info application is more helpful for farmers at this time compared to Google," she said during an online meeting with Commission V of the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Tuesday.
She explained that BMKG Info, with over 5 million downloads on the Play Store, offers a comprehensive range of information relevant to farmers, including weather and climate data, planting season calendars, and transportation services (shipping and flights).
