Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), will design tour packages to destinations along railway routes to support the development of regional tourism businesses.

"We are collaborating in creating interesting travel packages to local destinations," Dwi Marhen Yono, director of domestic tourism marketing at the Ministry of Tourism, said during the 2024 KAI Expo in Jakarta on Saturday.

He informed that the preparation of tourism packages to areas along railway routes, such as Yogyakarta, Semarang, Sukabumi, and Tasikmalaya, is being carried out with PT KAI (Persero), KAI Wisata, and regional tourism offices.

"This is our effort to encourage people who are reluctant to travel to become more interested in traveling by train," he said.

According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the number of tourists from January to September 2024 was recorded at 754 million.

Of the total tourists, around 9.5 percent or 60 million tourists used trains, Marhen said.

He also expressed his appreciation for the organization of the 2024 KAI Expo in Surabaya and Jakarta, which aims to increase the number of trains and promote tourism services using trains.

Meanwhile, KAI Wisata President Director Hendy Helmy said that his company will continue to improve services for consumers.

He added that the company has prepared a fleet of trains to accommodate the growing number of passengers ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

"We have prepared some of our fleets, especially luxury trains and special trains managed by KAI Wisata," he said.

KAI Wisata also plans to operate a special train from Jakarta to Yogyakarta.

"We will finalize the details and continue to improve the service. Hopefully, we can launch it for Christmas and New Year," Helmy said.

As part of the KAI Expo, the company is offering promotions for train tickets as well as various tourism services.
