Jakarta (ANTARA) - Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo urged Indonesia's young generation to embrace positive activities, such as exercising, over online gambling.

Based on data from the Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis Center (PPATK), more than 190 thousand children in Indonesia are exposed to online gambling, with a transaction value of Rp293.4 billion, or around USD18.4 million.

"It is sad to see people, including our youth, becoming entangled in online gambling. We know that online gambling poses a terrible danger that can damage the future of the nation," Ariotedjo stated here on Friday.

Hence, he emphasized his side's duty to ensure the young generation is shielded from the harmful spiral of online gambling.

Ariotedjo has issued Circular Letter No. 11.7.42 of 2024 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Online Gambling Activities within the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

He affirmed that the circular instructs leaders and employees of the ministry to actively convey appeals to the public or organize educational activities regarding the dangers of online gambling.

Furthermore, the Youth and Sports Ministry conducts online gambling prevention activities through positive programs.

"Through these positive activities, they will not think of trying online gambling," Ariotedjo remarked.

Some of the ministry's flagship programs include the inter-village championship routinely held in various regions. The event usually consists of a fun run and gymnastics.

"The participants of this competition range from children to adult categories so that all people are motivated to exercise. This also becomes part of promoting sports culture in the community," the minister added.
