"We will do a Car Free Night on the Sudirman-Thamrin route on December 31 and January 1. It is a road closure like the Car Free Day (CFD)," Director of the Greater Jakarta Police Traffic, Senior Commissioner Latif Usman, remarked here on Friday.
Unlike CFD, which only applies up to the Patung Kuda Statue and the National Monument (Monas), the CFN policy will be applied until the Harmoni area.
"CFD is usually up to the Patung Kuda Statue, but we will close (the road) until the Harmoni area," he remarked.
Usman stated that the decision to implement CFN was influenced by various festivals or events the provincial government will organize to mark New Year's Eve. These festivities will take place in multiple locations.
"There will be New Year's Eve celebrations at several points. It is still being discussed, but the celebration will definitely be held at the HI Roundabout, in the Banteng Square, and also along the Sudirman-Thamrin route," he remarked.
Usman announced that the Sudirman-Thamrin-Harmoni roads will be closed starting at 6 p.m. local time.
Meanwhile, MRT Jakarta will operate until 2 a.m. local time on New Year's Eve.
"It will be situational for TransJakarta as it operates on the Sudirman-Thamrin line," he remarked.
Usman also encouraged people who will celebrate New Year's Eve on Thamrin Street to use public transportation. His side has also prepared parking lots for those who drive private vehicles, including in several hotels and malls.
