"Parliament is fundamentally an institution that underpins good governance," BKSAP Chair Mardani Ali Sera said during the meeting on Sunday, as stated in a press release issued on Monday.
He added that in a democratic country, national policies can truly represent the public interest only if parliament plays a role in their creation.
Ali Sera argued that strengthening the role of parliament necessitates collaboration with various stakeholders, including international parliamentary institutions such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
He explained that such collaboration aims to gather insights into best practices and benchmarks for good governance implemented in other countries.
He emphasized that achieving effective governance requires adopting good parliamentary practices, such as increasing openness and providing public access to information about parliamentary processes.
"Parliamentary participation is integral to the philosophy of open government, which aims to establish a transparent and accountable administration in line with democratic principles," Ali Sera remarked.
Good governance and effective parliamentary practices were among the eight themes discussed in the draft resolution at the APA Standing Committee on Political Affairs meeting in Baghdad.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the parliaments of APA member countries, including Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Russia.
