Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police's Directorate of Cyber Crime is working with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs to conduct cyber patrols to detect and prevent the spread of deepfake videos.

Deepfakes are created using artificial intelligence (AI) technology and comprise fake videos, images, or audio that appear or sound very realistic.

"We and the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs are conducting cyber patrols to prevent the misuse of AI technology for creating deepfake videos," the National Police's Director of Cybercrime Brigadier General Himawan Bayu Aji said here on Thursday.

Aji added that the rise and abuse of AI technology for creating deepfake videos prompted the patrols.

The patrols detected deepfake videos made using footage of speeches made by officials, including President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, along with other public figures.

The videos sought to spread misleading or false information, and some were used for fraudulent purposes.

"If this continues, it could manipulate public opinion negatively against President Prabowo Subianto and his administration," he warned.

To address this, his side is working with the Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry to carry out cyber patrols and educational initiatives to prevent the spread of deepfake videos.

"Our team is conducting cyber patrols and providing recommendations to the ministry on how to enhance digital literacy concerning deepfakes, like how to clarify which information is true and which is fake," Aji said.

On Thursday, the Directorate of Cyber Crime announced the arrest of a suspect, identified by the initials AMA, 29, in connection with a deepfake video of a state official. The arrest resulted from a cyber patrol.

Aji informed that the suspect uploaded and spread videos created with deepfake technology using images and voices of state officials like President Prabowo and Vice President Gibran.
