Jakarta (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) member Amelia Anggraini urged the government to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into a shooting incident involving officers of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) and five Indonesian migrant workers.

Anggraini called on Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia to closely monitor the investigation into the incident, which she views as an instance of excessive force by Malaysian authorities against Indonesian workers.

"I want to make sure that the Malaysian government is open to resolving this case and that nothing is being covered up,” Anggraini stated here on Monday.

She expressed strong condemnation of the deadly shooting incident by Malaysian authorities, emphasizing that numerous alternative measures could have been employed to prevent such violations.

Meanwhile, Anggraini also indicated that the incident should not hinder the sound diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Furthermore, she expressed hope that this incident would serve as a catalyst for enhancing protection for Indonesian migrant workers.

She advised the Indonesian government to encourage individuals seeking employment abroad to go through official channels to avoid similar risks.

"We also appeal to the Indonesian government—considering this incident is in the public spotlight, especially regarding the protection of Indonesian citizens abroad—to make sure that similar incidents do not happen again in the future,” she emphasized.

The shooting by APMM officers occurred on Friday, January 24, at 3:00 a.m. Malaysian time, targeting five undocumented Indonesian migrant workers.

The incident resulted in one worker's death and another sustaining critical injuries, while three others are receiving treatment at various hospitals in Selangor, Malaysia.
