Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA) - An Indonesian legislator has voiced support for the government's action to ensure Malaysia's thorough probe into the recent shooting of five Indonesian migrant workers in the neighboring country's waters.

"We fully support President Prabowo Subianto's commitment to monitoring the case," said Hendry Munief, a member of the House of Representatives (DPR) who represents the people of Riau.

The shooting incident occurred in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, on January 24, 2025, as five Indonesian migrant workers were reportedly attempting to leave Malaysia illegally.

The excessive force, used by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) officers involving in the shooting, has resulted in the death of a worker hailing from Riau and injuries of four others.

In his press statement received here Saturday, Munief deplored the fatal shooting incident while highlighting the duty of care for citizens abroad is part of the government's responsibility.

He, however, warned Indonesians looking for work abroad of not easily being deceived by illegal recruiters of job seekers who offer big salaries. Instead, they need to get the jobs through legal procedures and agencies.

Regarding this fatal shooting case, President Prabowo has expressed belief that Malaysia will conduct a proper investigation, saying that the issue was discussed during his recent meeting with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The Malaysian authorities claimed the shooting happened when the five Indonesian migrant workers tried to resist arrest.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, however, denied this version of events.

The ministry's director of protection of Indonesian citizens, Judha Nugraha, emphasized there was no resistance from the migrants, based on the accounts of the four survivors, who are currently being treated at Klang Hospital in Malaysia.

Two of the four injured Indonesians were in stable condition when they provided a chronology of the shooting to representatives of the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

Both said the Indonesian workers did not try to resist arrest by wielding sharp weapons.

Hence, Nugraha said, Indonesia has demanded a thorough investigation into the shooting, including the possibility of excessive use of force by the Malaysian authorities.
